Choosing a kitchen ‘style’

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing a style of kitchen for your home. You can opt to echo the architectural theme of your house by coordinating the features and colours of the kitchen to the rest of the home; or alternatively you can just as easily put an ultra-modern kitchen in a period home, provided the design allows for an aesthetic ‘flow’ or ‘transition’ from one to the other. This could be achieved with the use of colour, or decorative touches such as retro ornaments, displayed glassware, appliances or bar stools, or even simply placing the right artwork in the space.

This ultra modern design with curved lines and sleek fittings and surfaces demonstrates that Ultimate Kitchens & Bathrooms’ designs (Hawthorn East, Melbourne) are as individual as you

If you’re unsure what style you’re attracted to, searching the internet or flicking through magazines is a great way to start getting ideas. Collect photos of kitchens of the different styles that you like and keep them in a hard copy or digital scrapbook. You will soon see a pattern emerge of the style that most appeals to you, as well as specific elements that you would like to have incorporated into your new kitchen.

Perhaps the first question to ask yourself is whether you want a modern style or a more traditional, classic look. The latter includes (but is not limited to) styles such as:

  • Country/English Cottage
  • French Provincial
  • Art Deco
  • Asian
  • Arts and Crafts

Or alternatively you might want to play around with an eclectic look (a mix of styles).

You can take all these ideas along to a  designer at Ultimate Kitchens & Bathrooms who can help you realise your dream.
